Robert "Hutch" Hutchinson

Robert "Hutch" Hutchinson, MBA has 45 years of experience in energy research, design, and business strategy and financial decision-making. He currently plays multiple roles—a Senior Fellow at Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a Senior Advisor at Boston Consulting Group, an investor and advisor for startup companies in the energy and climate spaces, and a consultant to breakthrough efforts in industrial and building efficiency.
 

At BCG, he played a fundamental role in building a global Climate practice and ensuring BCG invested in “seat at the table” activities like supporting the global COP process and key NGOs. For RMI, he supports efforts to expand the footprint and impact of RMI to new areas and technologies, with a particular focus on heavy industry and a personal “soft spot” for cement and concrete. He was previously Managing Director for all of RMI's programmatic activities, hiring and shaping teams, setting priorities, and ensuring funding for its programs.
 

Prior to RMI, he ran a cleantech venture group, following twenty years as a Managing Director and Partner at the Boston Consulting Group, where he started two offices, supported many more in their early days, was a leader in the Corporate Finance and Technology and Energy practices, and worked on four continents. He started his career working at Exxon and the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). At PNNL, he was part of a unique Systems Assessment group that worked closely with DOE leaders on technology choices and program priorities.
 

He was educated at Vanderbilt and Leeds Universities (Mechanical Engineering and Math), Cambridge University (Graduate work, Churchill Scholar), and Stanford University (MS in Mechanical Engineering and MBA, Arjay Miller Scholar).
